Inspired by the Shaw Brothers THE ENCHANTING SHADOW, A CHINESE GHOST STORY (1987) is set in Qing dynasty China, where a travelling tax collector stays in an abandoned ruin to shelter from a stormy night, but encounters much more other worldly happenings than he could’ve imagined.

Two more sequels A CHINESE GHOST STORY 2 (1990) and A CHINESE GHOST STORY 3 (1991) were subsequently released, due to the incredible popularity of the first one.
